One of the “occupational hazards” of working at the ASPCA is that it’s difficult not to fall for each and every pet we meet. From kittens to canines, these animals consistently move and inspire us with their strength, resilience and loving spirits—but sometimes, we connect with one so completely that they become part of our lives forever. Such was the case with ASPCA Vet Tech Jennifer Doyle and her newly-adopted Chihuahua Mix, K.C. Here is their Happy Tail.
During the “Clear the Shelters” adoption event on Saturday, August 15, four hundred animal shelters around the country reduced or completely waived adoption fees to help connect adoptable dogs and cats with loving families. Now the numbers are in, and we are thrilled to announce that more than 18,000 cats and dogs found homes during this nationwide event!
We know you’ll agree that horses aren’t food. We don’t raise them so we can eat them, and horses hold a special place in our country’s heritage. While no horse slaughterhouses currently operate in the United States, the threat of their return looms constantly and few realize that approximately 150,000 American horses are trucked across our borders every year to be brutally slaughtered for food.
The words “horse auction” may not mean much to you, but for thousands of American equines, they are a death sentence. At these weekly events, horses are auctioned off to buyers who can use them for any purpose, which means that kill buyers—those who make money selling horses for their meat—are lurking around every corner.
