California Becomes First State in U.S. to Ban Sale of Puppy Mill Dogs in Pet Stores

Sacramento, CALocal and national animal welfare organizations today commend California Gov. Jerry Brown for signing into law legislation that will prevent the sale of commercially raised dogs, cats and rabbits in pet stores across the state of California. The law also encourages partnerships that promote the adoption of homeless pets.

ASPCA, Coalition of Interest Groups Welcome Defeat of All 11 “Ag-Gag”/Anti-Whistleblower Bills in 2013

NEW YORK—The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) and a broad spectrum of public interest groups today welcomed the defeat of all 11 ag-gag/anti-whistleblower bills that were introduced during 2013 legislative sessions across the country. North Carolina’s session ended on Friday without a vote on Senate Bill (SB) 648, which would have suppressed whistleblower investigations at farms and other facilities.

We, the undersigned group of civil liberties, public health, food safety, environmental, food justice, animal welfare, legal, workers’ rights, journalism, and First Amendment organizations and individuals, hereby state our opposition to proposed whistleblower suppression laws, known as “ag-gag” bills, being introduced in states around the country. These bills seek to prevent investigations of farms that reveal critical information about the production of animal products.
