Leading Organizations Endorse the PUPP Act to Keep Pets and Families Together
When families and individuals experience personal hardship, restrictive policies make it nearly impossible to find emergency housing that lets them stay with their four-legged family members. To help people experiencing homelessness, federal lawmakers introduced the Providing for Unhoused People with Pets (PUPP) Act in Congress to increase access to housing and services for people with pets.
The PUPP Act would authorize the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to award emergency shelters with grants that enable them to accommodate unhoused individuals with pets. These grants can be used to construct new properties, renovate properties to better serve clients who have pets, or cover the costs of critical pet care supplies. Grants would also fund pet-related operating costs, like basic veterinary and behavioral services.
