Position Statement on Alternative Methods of Birth Control

Background
Scientists have been searching for decades for safe, effective and practical alternatives to surgical sterilization as a means of preventing pregnancy in companion animals, captive exotics, wildlife and other animals. Nevertheless, spaying females and neutering males remain the safest and most effective methods available to achieve population control.

ASPCA Position
The ASPCA follows developments in this field with interest. At this point in time (January 2011), the ASPCA recommends the spaying and neutering of animals, including pediatric patients, as the preferred methods of bringing pet overpopulation under control. Intratesticular injection of zinc gluconate in male puppies is also supported.
