Fun Ways to Safely Celebrate Your Pet’s Birthday!
Our pets bring boundless joy, loyalty and unconditional love into our lives. And while they may not understand the concept of birthdays, it’s only fitting that we take the time to celebrate and honor them with the same love and enthusiasm they shower upon us daily. Even if you don’t know your pet’s exact birthdate you can still choose a significant day, such as the anniversary of adoption, to commemorate the moment they became a member of your family. Whether your pet is a playful pup or curious kitty, here are some fun ways to make your pet’s special day memorable.
1. Throw a Pet Party:
This can be as big or small as you and your pet prefer. If you are social butterflies, this can be a playdate at a dog-friendly park or in your own backyard. Order a banner with your dog’s name or face on it and ensure there are plenty of toys, treats and water bowls available for all the furry friends. If your dog doesn’t like crowds, invite one furry friend who you know they get along with for a more intimate celebration. For a cat, a cozy corner with extra soft blankets and toys might be best.
2. Homemade Birthday Treats:
Whip up a cake or bite-sized treats using pet-friendly ingredients. We even have some recipe suggestions for you!
Pumpkin Peanut Butter Dog Treats
- 2 ½ cups of oat flour
- ½ cup unsweetened applesauce
- ¾ cup of pumpkin puree
- 3 tbsp peanut butter (Make sure it’s xylitol-free!)
Preheat oven to 350F. In a bowl, mix all ingredients until well combined. Roll dough out so that it’s a half inch thick. Use a cookie cutter to cut into biscuits. Lay out on a lightly greased cookie sheet and bake for 40 minutes or until crunchy. Allow to cool before serving!
Kitty Croutons
- 5oz can of tuna (drained)
- ½ cup white cornmeal
- ½ cup rice flour
- 1 tbsp dried catnip
- ½ cup water
Preheat oven to 350F. In a bowl, mix all ingredients until well combined. Roll small pieces by hand and lay on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until browned and crunchy. Allow to cool before serving!
Note: If your pet is on a specialized diet, always talk to your veterinarian before offering new foods or treats. Alternatively, you can use your pet’s own food to make treats! Dry food can be ground in a blender and combined with water to form a dough for baking. Wet food can be rolled into small balls and either baked into crispy treats or placed in the freezer until solid.
3. Gifts:
Spoil your furry friend with new toys! This can range from squeaky balls to interactive puzzles to fresh new bowls or even a personalized bandana. Alternatively, you can consider making a donation to your local animal shelter or rescue organization in honor of your pet’s birthday.
4. Quality Time:
Never underestimate the power of quality cuddle time, especially after a day filled with festivities. Whether it’s a cozy nap together or gentle brushing session these quiet moments can create lasting memories and deepen the bond between you and your cherished pet.
