Adopted and loved.
We are proud to support animals at every stage of their journey from rescue to adoption. From building a state-of-the-art behavioral rehab center, to activating our staff and volunteers during natural disasters, to working side by side with law enforcement during puppy mill and animal fighting interventions, we always advocate for animals to receive the fair treatment, respect and love they deserve. Just like we did for Gertie.
After waiting 55 days for a new home, Gertie, an eight-year-old Boxer-mix at the Humane Society of Cedar Creek Lake in Tool, Texas, was transported by the ASPCA to the Humane Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) in Waukesha, Wisconsin.
Upon her arrival, Gertie caught the eye of Jessica Pinkos, director of special projects and a Boxer lover. She fostered Gertie after Gertie underwent two minor medical procedures, and later adopted her.
But Gertie’s story doesn’t end there. She was selected for HAWS’ reading program for kids called Hannah’s Haven, named in memory of a former HAWS dog. In addition to finding a home in a new community, Gertie — who visits schools and listens as students find courage and enjoyment while reading to a furry friend — is teaching humane values to children.
“Shelters are full of wonderful dogs like Gertie...and there are a lot of Gerties out there whose stories have yet to be told.”
