Starting Fall 2023, Florida International University (FIU), an ASPCA partner, is launching a Professional Science Master’s in Veterinary Forensic Science. The curriculum is geared toward those working in animal services and will provide students with the practical experience and critical thinking skills necessary to prevent and respond effectively to animal cruelty within communities across the country. 

“The ASPCA strives to advance the application of veterinary medicine and forensic sciences in the investigation, prosecution and prevention of cruelty to animals as part of our ongoing effort to expand capacities to protect animals from cruelty and neglect,” said Rachel Touroo, ASPCA’s Senior Director of Veterinary Forensic Sciences. “Our partnership with FIU will allow us to reach current and future animal welfare professionals who can support the field of veterinary forensic sciences, ultimately saving more animal lives and bringing their abusers to justice.”

This announcement comes just as we acknowledge National Forensic Science Week (September 18-24), a week that recognizes the contribution that forensic science makes to the criminal justice system. To date, our Veterinary Forensic Sciences team has assisted with over 2,500 cases of suspected animal cruelty or neglect, touching the lives and providing second chances for over 10,000 of the nation’s most vulnerable animals. Our Forensic Veterinarians provide examinations, evidence and analysis to assist law enforcement agencies nationwide. 

The 16-month online program offered by the Global Forensic and Justice Center will allow those enrolled the flexibility to engage with the subject matter experts from anywhere in the world.
