Cat Training Resources
Start With a Certified Cat Trainer*
Look for trainers who have passed a written and/or hands-on examination of their knowledge of cat behavior, training theory and teaching skills. Check out the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants for more resources.
What qualities should you look for in a trainer?
- Holds the proper certification, as listed above.
- Emphasizes rewards-based training methods. These methods focus on rewarding the cat for good behaviors and managing the cat’s environment to prevent mistakes rather than punishing them.
- Does not guarantee results. Trainers should recognize and acknowledge the complexity of both human and cat behavior
*If your cat is experiencing serious aggression, fear or anxiety, skip right to a veterinary behaviorist.
If you still need more help after seeing a certified trainer, visit a veterinary behaviorist.
Veterinary behaviorists are veterinarians who have completed a residency with a specialty in animal behavior and have passed a qualifying examination. A list of veterinary behaviorists can be found at dacvb.org. Click the “For the Public” tab, then “Find a Board-Certified Behaviorist.”
