Great Plains SPCA Partners with ASPCA to Honor Senator Bob Dole by Helping 12 Animals Find Loving Homes

MERRIAM, KS–  In celebration of Adopt a Shelter Dog Month this October, Great Plains SPCA partnered with the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) to honor longtime champion for animals, Sen. Bob Dole, by hosting a virtual and in-person adoption event on October 16. As part of this exciting collaboration, adopters of foster pets were offered 50 percent off adoption fees, and 12 homeless animals – eight dogs and four cats – found loving homes.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with the ASPCA to honor Senator Bob Dole by promoting foster and long-term pets during Adopt a Shelter Dog Month,” said Keegan Prentice, Marketing & Fundraising Programs Manager for the Great Plains SPCA. “Right now, adopters and fosters are more important than ever. We are grateful for ongoing support from organizations like the ASPCA, and animal welfare champions like Senator Dole for their support in finding and keeping pets in homes.”

“As a life-long advocate for animal welfare, I'm delighted to see the ASPCA and Great Plains SPCA come together to find forever homes for Kansan animals in need,” said Sen. Dole. “I have seen, time and time again, how these wonderful pets bring such great joy to their families.”

“Both adoption and fostering puts shelter animals in safe and loving homes, helps shelters conserve their space and resources, and provides people with comfort and companionship, which is so important right now,” said Andy Briscoe, director of state legislation for the ASPCA, Central region. “The ASPCA is thrilled to partner with Great Plains SPCA to help animals find loving homes, and we are grateful to Senator Dole, a true American hero, for his lifelong commitment to advocating on behalf of animals.”

As part of this special event, Sen. Dole was recognized for his incredible work as a long-time animal advocate and champion for animals. During his remarkable service in Congress from 1961 to 1996, he spearheaded the passage of several landmark legislative advances to protect dogs, cats, farm animals, and horses. His fierce commitment to animals has continued well past his service in Congress, including his most recent involvement in the successful repeal of Overland Park’s breed-specific legislation. Senator Dole is a regular at the ASPCA’s Capitol Hill adoption events, urging attendees to bring home their new best friend.

Including the 12 animals adopted during the Bob Dole Adoption Event, nearly 60 animals from GPSPCA found new homes last week – up from 50 adoptions the week before, thanks to the increased visibility from this special event. One of the lucky dogs who was adopted on Saturday was Reba, a Bulldog mix who was surrendered to GPSPCA’s HERO (Humane. Education. Resources. Outreach.) team.

“We believe that Reba recently had puppies and was likely used as a breeding dog,” said Prentice. “Once in our care, she was spayed, and we are thrilled to see her find a new, loving home, where she can experience the joys of playtime and human affection.”
