ASPCA Grants More Than $45,000 to Help Equine Rescues Find Homes for At-Risk Horses through Collaboration and Relocation Efforts

The ASPCA “Teaming Up to Hoof It Home” grant highlights increased capacity and partnership in the equine welfare community that makes critical equine relocations possible

NEW YORK—The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) today announced that it has granted more than $45,000 to four equine rescue organizations to assist their efforts to identify new homes for at-risk equines by collaborating with other groups to transport horses to new locations where they have a greater chance of being adopted. Successfully transporting horses directly to adopters or rescue organizations in other areas of the country, reflects increased capacity for horses in need, as well as a commitment within the equine welfare community to leverage teamwork, collaboration, and professionalism to secure the best possible outcomes for horses in transition as they move from one home, career, or owner to the next. 

“Oftentimes, all that prohibits a horse in transition from finding a new home is his location. Our goal is to remove this barrier by providing funds for creative collaborations aimed at connecting adopters and equines nationwide,” said Dr. Emily Weiss, vice president of Equine Welfare for the ASPCA. “With research suggesting there are approximately 2.3 million adults in the U.S. with the strong interest and capacity to adopt a horse, the ASPCA is proud to support the innovative and thoughtful ways equine groups are finding those homes for horses through rescue, training and relocation.”

Recipients of the ASPCA Teaming Up to Hoof It Home grant include:

  • Love This Horse, California.
  • West Virginia Horse Network, West Virginia. 
  • Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare Inc., Puerto Rico.
  • 3 Sisters Equine Refuge, Oregon.

The ASPCA is focused on ensuring horses nationwide have good welfare, which includes working collaboratively with stakeholders in both the rescue community and equine industries to help at-risk horses safely transition to new careers and homes, increasing safety net support for horse owners, and enhancing anti-cruelty efforts. In 2018, the ASPCA awarded more than $800,000 in equine grants to assist 56 equine organizations across the country.
