Uplands PEAK Sanctuary Completes Expansion to Provide Safe Haven for Abused and Neglected Farm Animals

Salem, Ind.—Uplands PEAK Sanctuary today announced the completion of its expansion project, which includes a five-acre pasture, fencing, and sheltering that provides a safe haven for abused and neglected farm animals. The expansion was made partly possible with assistance from the ASPCA^® (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals^®) who provided a $5,000 grant to complete the project.

Uplands PEAK is the only farm animal sanctuary in the region that rescues and rehabilitates mistreated farm animals, educates the public on the benefits of a vegan lifestyle, and promotes sustainability. Located on 25-acres of land, the sanctuary is surrounded by animal agriculture, including a chicken factory farm less than a mile away, and nearby beef, dairy, and veal production.

“Uplands PEAK is in a unique position to expose people to the serious issues associated with factory farming such as the common denial of even basic care,” said Suzanne McMillan, content director of the ASPCA’s Farm Animal Welfare Campaign. “We’re pleased to be able to expand Uplands PEAK Sanctuary’s capacity to care for these vulnerable animals and educate the public about their plight.”

“We foster compassion and educate the public by rescuing and giving sanctuary to farmed animals like cows, pigs, and chickens,” said Mark Pruitt, co-founder of Uplands PEAK Sanctuary. “Our sanctuary gives people the unique opportunity to meet and connect with farmed animals as individuals, and offers a place where they can deepen their connection with people and nature.”

In addition to its expansion, Uplands PEAK recently accepted two cows rescued by the ASPCA from a 70-acre property in Westport, Mass., where more than 1,000 farm animals of various species were discovered living in deplorable conditions. At the request of local authorities, the ASPCA has provided daily care and enrichment for these animals at its emergency shelter, and has subsequently placed majority of the animals with reputable animal welfare agencies and rescue groups throughout the country.
