Helping New York City Cruelty Victims
In New York City, the ASPCA works closely with the NYPD to provide shelter and care for animal victims of cruelty and neglect. Through our two facilities, the ASPCA Animal Recovery Center (ARC), and the Canine Annex for Recovery and Enrichment (CARE), our dedicated team of more than 45 sheltering, medical and animal behavioral professionals provide specialized medical and behavioral treatments to help animals recover from trauma and cruelty. This team also works closely with the ASPCA Animal Hospital and Adoption Center in NYC, as well as several other ASPCA teams that assist with cruelty and neglect, this ensures coordinated response and operations and holistic, balanced, high-quality care for the animals we serve.
Animal Recovery Center
The ASPCA Animal Recovery Center provides lifesaving veterinary care and behavioral assessments and treatments for both dogs and cats, many of whom are victims of neglect or cruelty. ARC’s expert staff helps animals recover and heal from what can be severe physical and psychological trauma and provide treatments that help improve their quality of life to help them find loving homes.
Canine Annex for Recovery and Enrichment
The ASPCA Gloria Gurney Canine Annex for Recovery & Enrichment (CARE) opened in May 2014 in Manhattan to provide much-needed care for dogs who are a part of animal cruelty investigations in the New York City area. The 5,000-square-foot facility was designed to offer its canine residents as calming an environment as possible, including soothing paint colors and skylights that line the hallways. While here, staff works with dogs on both physical and mental enrichment as well as behavioral assessments and treatments, daily exercise, and training sessions to help prepare them for adoption.
