ASPCA Arrests Staten Island Man for Neglecting Dog

Chihuahua Suffered from Ulcerated Eye, Dehydration
NEW YORK--Humane Law Enforcement agents of the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) arrested Staten Island resident Tino Garuccio today for starving and neglecting to seek medical attention for a one-year-old female Chihuahua named ChaCha.
On September 16, ASPCA Agent Ann Kelly responded to a complaint of a neglected dog with an untreated eye injury and took the dog to the ASPCA's Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital for treatment. A subsequent investigation revealed that the suspect had been caring for ChaCha from August 5 to September 16 during the pet owner's absence, and he failed to seek treatment for an ulcerated right eye. Upon examination, ASPCA veterinarians determined that the dog was in pain, dehydrated and emaciated as a result of starvation.
ChaCha's infected eye was removed as a result of the untreated injury. She was returned to her owner on October 1 and is recovering. Her prognosis is good.
Garuccio, 36, a bus driver, was charged with two counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty and he faces up to one year in jail and/or a $1,000 fine for each count if convicted.
