ASPCA Arrests Brooklyn Man for Neglecting Terrier Mix Dog
Dog Suffered for Several Weeks from Untreated Wound
NEW YORKHumane Law Enforcement agents of the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) arrested Brooklyn resident Claudio Moncion earlier this week for neglecting his 2-year-old terrier mix dog.
On June 20, the ASPCA responded to a report of a dog with an untreated leg injury at the suspect’s address, but no dog was discovered on the property. ASPCA HLE agents visited the site a day later and asked Mr. Moncion to see the dog. The dog, named Johnny, had a large open wound and could not put weight on its left hind leg.
Moncion stated that he did not take the dog to a veterinarian but instead attempted to treat the wound with topical ointments. The suspect surrendered Johnny to the ASPCA and the dog was immediately taken to the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital where veterinarians treated the infected wound. Upon examination, veterinarians also discovered that the dog’s left hind paw was infected.
Tests revealed that the injury to the dog’s leg was a minimum of two to three weeks old. Veterinarians determined it was necessary to amputate the dog’s leg due to the injury being left untreated.
Moncion, 60, was charged with one count of misdemeanor animal cruelty and he faces up to a year in prison if convicted.
