ASPCA Announces Arrest of Queens Man for Animal Cruelty
Starved, Caged Pet Pit Found in BasementNEW YORK, January 22, 2008Special Agent Jennifer Sarasky of the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) arrested Mr. Nicholas Kaiassas on January 15, 2008, for Animal Cruelty.
On December 30, 2007, Special Agent Sarasky discovered an emaciated female pit bull, caged and severely underweight, at a private two-family residence on 34th Avenue in Queens. The dog was taken to the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital for emergency treatment. Veterinarians determined the four-year-old dog was so weak and starved that she could not stand, and she was close to death.
After treatment and proper feeding, the dog, whom vets named Cali, is doing well. Her weight increased from 24 to 33 pounds in less than three weeks, and she is available for adoption.
Mr. Kaiassas, 30, faces a fine of $1,000 and up to one year in jail.
