ASPCA Responders Provide Relief for Animals in Southeast Missouri

NEW YORK--The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®), at the request of the Caruthersville Humane Society, the City of Caruthersville, Mo. and the County of Pemiscot, has dispatched its Field Investigations and Response team to assist in the emergency rescue and sheltering of displaced animals by the recent flooding.

ASPCA responders arrived this afternoon to organize a temporary sheltering plan for pets affected by the natural disaster. Nearly 40 animals have been taken to the Caruthersville Humane Society where they will be triaged, housed and reunited with their owners.

"We realize the stress of having to evacuate your home and leave your pet behind," said Kyle Held, the Midwest director of ASPCA Field Investigations and Response. "We're pleased to be able to offer our assistance to the Caruthersville Humane Society in caring for and reuniting local residents with their animals."

The ASPCA's custom-built animal transport trailer is en route to Caruthersville to bring in much needed supplies provided by PetSmart Charities, and additional equipment including a boat that will allow responders to search for additional animal victims. The ASPCA is expecting to respond to more animal rescue requests throughout the week.

Held added, "Staff and volunteers from the local shelter have been working around the clock, and the ASPCA will continue to provide supplies and support in Caruthersville and the surrounding communities as long as we're needed."
