Second Annual Supermarket Scorecard Takes On Store Brands
A few months ago, we asked nearly 10,000 ASPCA supporters what information would help them make more humane choices at the grocery store.
Of those supporters who buy meat, eggs or dairy, 91% told us they want to know about the animal welfare standards of supermarkets’ private label (or “own”) brands. While our Shop With Your Heart Grocery List catalogs the products that we recognize as more humane at various grocery chains, there wasn’t a resource that analyzed the animal welfare policies behind supermarkets’ own brands … until now!
Meet the New ASPCA Supermarket Scorecard
The newly released 2024 ASPCA Supermarket Scorecard grades the largest U.S. grocery store chains’ own brands — a change from the inaugural version — as well as their overall corporate policies on critical farm animal welfare issues. We focused on the cruel caging of egg-laying hens, the breed and living conditions of chickens raised for meat (also known as broiler chickens), and the extremely restrictive confinement of pregnant pigs. These issues directly affect the lives of the nine billion broiler chickens, 330 million egg-laying hens and six million pregnant pigs raised for food every year in the U.S.
What’s in the Supermarket Scorecard?
By using our interactive Supermarket Scorecard, you’ll learn:
- How your store performed on our farm animal welfare grading criteria compared to the other largest supermarket chains in the country
- Which stores have 100% cage-free eggs within their own brands
- Which stores have gestation crate-free pork products within their own brands
- The first store to use a healthier chicken breed within one of their own store brands
- Which stores have farm animal welfare policies and offer transparency
- Which stores have made progress since last year
- Which stores still have no policies to address critical farm animal issues
No matter how your store scored, you can make your voice heard for farm animals by asking the stores that still have zero farm animal welfare policies to make a public commitment. Sign our petition to ask those stores to STOP being cagey about farm animals!
