Have a More Humane Holiday: Our Easy Checklist
It’s the most wonderful — and most busy — time of the year! Booking travel, connecting with family and friends and gathering over meals are items on most Americans’ long to do lists this season. Here’s what we can help take OFF of your list: planning your grocery shopping and finding the most humane food to keep factory farming out of your festivities.
Use our easy checklist to get savvy and prepare for a more humane holiday season:
1. Avoid misleading labels
Use our Label Guide to learn which common food labels and claims actually represent a meaningful improvement in the lives of farm animals and which are hogwash.
2. Check if your supermarket is on the nice list…or the naughty list
Our 2024 ASPCA Supermarket Scorecard graded the 25 largest supermarkets in the U.S. on their farm animal welfare policies and progress, plus the standards of their store brand products. Use our Scorecard to find out how your store scored and if they carry higher-welfare store brands.
3. Find our grocery list — we’ve checked it twice!
Use our Shop With Your Heart Grocery List to find meat, eggs and dairy (plus plenty of plant-based substitutions) that are carried by many major grocery stores.
4. Support your local higher-welfare farm and community
While the holidays are always an important time for the grocery industry, they’re also a big opportunity for farmers. Use our list of farms by state to find an animal welfare-certified farmer near you, and get in touch early to place your orders. You can an even greater impact on your local community and economy, and of course, will be supporting more humane farming.
5. Plan your holiday meals...from the couch
If your store didn’t score well on our Scorecard, we’ve still got you covered. Find welfare-certified and plant-based farms and brands, most of which deliver across the country.
6. Don’t forget about your furry friends
Find welfare-certified treats, cat food and dog food, plus some plant-based options, too, in the pet food section of our Shop With Your Heart Grocery List.
