Federal lawmakers today introduced a bill to require much needed protections for farm animals used for agricultural research at federal facilities. The bill follows a New York Times article that revealed egregious animal cruelty at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center, a federal livestock research facility in Nebraska.

The ASPCA® today announced that thousands of animals and their families in Los Angeles were assisted in 2014 through the national animal welfare organization’s multi-year, $25 million commitment to save more animals in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The ASPCA also announced that it will expand key elements of its services and programs in Los Angeles to assist more animals in 2015.

The United States District Court for the Middle District of Alabama concluded restitution hearings on Friday for individuals who pleaded guilty to dog fighting in the second largest dog fighting raid in U.S. history in August 2013. U.S. District Judge Keith Watkins ordered the defendants collectively responsible for $1,987,411.95—the largest ever ordered in a federal dog fighting case.

The ASPCA commended New Jersey lawmakers today for unanimously voting in favor of a bill requiring pet stores to disclose the origins of the dogs they sell and prohibit them from sourcing animals from breeders who fail to meet even the most basic care standards prescribed by federal and state law.
