The ASPCA today commends the members of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee for approving an anti-horse slaughter amendment to its fiscal year 2017 Agriculture Appropriations bill. The Udall-Kirk Amendment, introduced by Sens. Tom Udall (D-NM) and Mark Kirk (R-IL), and cosponsored by Sens. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Chris Coons (D-DE), and Jack Reed (D-RI) was passed in the full committee by a bipartisan vote and will continue a ban on the gruesome horse slaughter industry on U.S. soil by preventing the USDA from using taxpayer dollars to conduct horse slaughter inspections, which is a requirement for slaughterhouses to operate.

The ASPCA applauds Michigan lawmakers and Gov. Rick Snyder for enacting H.B. 4478 to help Michigan’s families and companion animals by giving judges the legal authority to include pets in protective orders for victims of domestic violence. Gov. Snyder held a bill signing ceremony yesterday, and the new law takes effect immediately.

The Joplin Humane Society and ASPCA will hold an adoption event and free microchip clinic on Saturday, May 21, in Parr Hill Park to coincide with the five-year anniversary of the 2011 Joplin tornado. The event—called “Paws in the Park”—is part of Joplin Proud, four days of events to recognize the progress made since the disaster hit and decimated a third of the community.

The ASPCA today announced that it will offer a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case of a German shepherd found abandoned with his mouth duct-taped shut on the side of a Long Island, New York highway. This reward is in addition to the $2,000 being offered by the Suffolk County SPCA, which is leading the investigation.

The ASPCA today commends the members of the U.S. House Appropriations Committee for approving an anti-horse slaughter amendment to its fiscal year 2017 Agriculture Appropriations bill. The amendment will prevent the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) from using taxpayer dollars to inspect horse slaughter facilities, which is a requirement for their operation.
