Pets in Classrooms

The ASPCA is not opposed to the keeping of “pets” in the classroom to teach young children respect for animals and humane care. However, the ASPCA believes that where pets are kept in classrooms, their environment should be non-stressful and should meet the needs of the species being kept. The ASPCA believes that classroom pets should be domesticated animals. Handling should be minimized and carefully supervised by an adult. Finally, provision for care over weekends and for periods when school is closed must be made. In addition, classroom pets should receive the same level of care as do household pets, as outlined in section 2.6, Criteria for Responsible Care.
