Is Yeast Dough Harmful To Dogs?

What is the harm in giving dogs yeast dough? And does that include bread? My dog recently started eating bits of bread as treats. Also, I know that fatty foods may be harmful and I am concerned that l/d canine food has pork fat listed as its second ingredient.

- Sandy

The problem with yeast dough, Sandy, is that it can rise and cause gas accumulation in your dog's digestive system. This can be painful and can cause his or her stomach or intestines to rupture. After the dough is cooked and the yeast has fully risen, this concern diminishes. Pets can have small bits of bread as treats. However, these treats should not constitute more than five to 10 percent of your pet's daily caloric intake.

As for the l/d diet, it was made specifically for dogs with liver problems. It has been formulated for easy digestion and to help diminish the liver's workload. I understand your concern that one of the first ingredients listed for this diet is pork fat, but fat is a highly digestible energy source, providing more than double the energy of protein or carbohydrates. Fats also help with the absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. In addition, pork fat contains linoleic acid, which is necessary for a healthy coat and skin, growth, cell membrane health and fat-soluble vitamin interactions. Fat also helps with food palatability. Although too much fat is not healthy, the right quantity is necessary to meet your pet’s nutritional needs.

We recommend that you discuss your pet's diet with your vet and veterinary support team. They know your pet’s history, and they’ll be able to work with you to find the best diet for your dog.
