Fish Feces

My betta, koi and goldfish are each in separate tanks. What foods should I feed them? And can you also tell me what fish feces are composed of?

- James M.

Your pet supply store should be able to advise you on which foods are appropriate for your fish, James. Sometimes different species have different dietary requirements, but not always. As for the exact composition of fish feces, it’s likely dependent on a number of factors, including environment and diet. Fish feces probably contain some level of nitrogen and phosphorus, so please remember that fish tanks containing an excess of accumulated waste are considered unhealthy. As the waste decays, oxygen levels can be reduced and other potentially unhealthy gases can be released. You may want to contact a fish expert at a pet supply store, aquarium or university for more information.
