Bad Kitty Breath

My kitten has terrible breath.  I feed him dry food, and he gets wet food as an occasional treat.  Are there some types of treats out there that can help my cat's breath, or is this just normal in felines?

Thank you for contacting the ASPCA Pet Nutrition Service, Katie, and congratulations on your new kitten!

Unpleasant breath can be normal in a healthy kitten, but it could also be the sign of a health problem. It’s unlikely that a young kitten would have dental disease, but there are some other problems that can contribute to bad breath, such as a broken tooth, an infection or a sore in the mouth from an injury or virus. It would be best to have your kitten examined by a veterinarian so that these medical problems can be ruled out.

If all is well, you might want to give your cat treats that help with bad breath. Some veterinarians carry CET Chews for cats, and those may do the trick. You can also buy a food that helps prevent dental disease. Click here to find out more about this topic.
