I haven't been able to ride my horse for about two months. I want to ride him again, but I'm afraid that he might act differently or act up because he hasn't been ridden in a while. Do you think that this is a possibility?
Emily, you’re right that some horses will have a bit more energy and act more excited after having time off. This is more common with horses who are stall-bound or kept in small pastures with limited interactions and “changes of scenery.” To decrease the likelihood that your horse will “act up,” I suggest that you provide him with plenty of interaction every day for at least a two or three days before you plan to ride. Provide enrichment, hand walk him to some new areas, turn him out in a paddock near horses he does not normally see, etc. Your first few rides should be kept short while you both readjust to the routine.
