This is very devastating... I hope one day we can end animal cruelty. It's so sad that people would do such a thing! It's also sad that dog breeds that are "Out of Style" get killed!!Isn't that so stupid?

This is so sad. Reading this almost makes me depressed. When I'm older, I am going to volunteer at any local ASPCA's. These animals need help, and if we all worked together, all Puppy Mills could be put to end.

When is the United States going to get SMART and OUTLAW cat and dog breeding altogether. There is no need for this when animals are put to death in shelters every day. You can find purebred dogs and cats in shelters all over the country! This is a needless enterprise and the ASPCA should focus their efforts on outlawing it once and for all since everyone knows that these breeders still get away with literally murder and probably pay off the inspectors to let them alone!

I agree with UKNOWWHAT!
Only should the animals be taken away IF they are living in a terrible condition, with no exercise. THEN can you call them an "animal hoarder".
I understand there is a law for how many animals you can have, and that law should be kept.
Like UKNOWWHAT said, these people are probably the ones with the most loving hearts for animals!

SUGGESTED READING: http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/feral_cats/facts/TNR_statement.html. As for multiple cat lovers and hoarders, MAY I SUGGEST PARTICIPATION IN TRAP NUETER SPAY (TNR) PROGRAM PROVIDED BY LOCAL ANIMAL ENTITIES AROUND THE UNITED STATES. IT IS USUALLY FREE TO THOSE ON LIMITED INCOME; ONLY PARTICIPATION AND ENERGY IS NECESSARY. Sadly, I am not surprised at lax oversight; it is common to find few-and-far-between "federal" or "animal organization" oversight - are "humane" intervention(s) by nonprofit groups and individuals; yes, let's not forget unique individuals such as petless neighbors trying to care; I do not speak of just hoarders. NONPROFIT PROMOTIONS dba ACA - accronym for Animal Care Aware is prepared to surface in order to better safeguard animal and wildlife in an attempt to fill in a still-very-large-gap not met by those governing as they should with tax payer or donated dollars. I base knowledge on firsthand experience and trusted reading. As far as a previous comment suggesting established animal organizations "donate" to people caring for such animals whether in distress or not, are in someway obligated NOT to, as part of an accountability aspect i.e. time tracking. Donation is disguised as "free vouchures", "free consultation", "free feral food" for those who participate and "free housing" (for feral cats) during winter weather such as home-made styrofoam box or like material with small access, straw flooring - and to include if possible, an awning like roof/board over the opening. Hoarders are not rational in extreme cases. Also suggested, prior to taking on such a responsibility, seek assistance; show "rationale" from the onslaught. Place humane trap with ample cover in winter with food and water at the far end -opposite end of trap door. You may obtain a rental from participating animal groups - namely local shelter for $50 or so with a portion to administrative processing considered a dontation and possible tax deductible - or purchase for less than $50 in some cases less than $30. Another suggestion is set up on your personal property if you are less likely to venture out, and, less legal ramifications are had when at large and at risk pets are found on personal property. When cats venture out, though they should not, even if fixed, their ear is to be clipped to let it be known to the owner, alot can happen to their beloved when not safe within their home. I participate and find it rewarding to care for as many as one can muster while not neglecting owned pets or putting them at risk as well. For those whom complain about organizations including government, should spend energy on looking at themselves. Currently, I seek programs to allow public to "sponsor" any of all animals on the brink-of- extinction and or BLM wildlife under this Act and that Act - with evidence of sponsored animal being appropriated for to be also appropriately care for. People participate in adopt-a-highway - why not leave that to federal or governing agency and leave compassion and passion up to the public and animal programs at large. For purchased animals from pet stores, exotic or otherwise, excluding adopted pets, go ahead purchase with eyes wide open to adverse outcome - which can happen even with pets adopted from a verifiable shelter, yet, sterilize new found family member. AKC lists pets without papers also under certain verifiable circumstances. Pets from any source is worthy of unique care by all care providers. My pet is a special needs; I give special attention which consist of a special aka modified diet and close monitor of seizures as he was rescued from a puppy mill. Vet suggested I put him to sleep, I rebutted, alot can happen in 24 hours; give him back to me and I will do what I must to pull him through. Wise decision it was. So, please, do not just depend on those with papers (both human and animal). Go with your gut and quit blaming others for circumstance you do not agree with and support their efforts.

Working in rescue these past 4+ years I find it appalling that these Puppy Mills have not been forced to shut down. For the most part they don't follow the new laws, they just don't care because they know only too well that there are not enough people to enforce the laws! The good breeder and smaller kennels are hounded when they're the ones that don't go against the laws. These Puppy Mill owners need their names and place of business made public so that people will know NOT to go there. They should be shut down when they do not comply - this is the only way to solve this hideous problem. The first visit is to document the charges and ample time given to make all of the change. A re-visit will be made and if nothing has been done they are shut down on the spot. When a shut down occurs we all need to help in getting these pups into shelters and safe houses until they can be re-homed. Getting rid of these mills should be at the top of the list. Also, people should be allowed to schooled in what needs to be done and get more people out there getting things done. We are asking so much of so few people - we need to help solve this issue AT ONCE.

Instead of just writing comments here will everyone commit to sending a letter of protest to the Head of the USDA? Of course they don't even care about humans but if enough of us keep the protests hot enough it may do SOMETHING to end this despicable industry.

"No human compaionship or toys"...this makes me sick! Domesticated animals are gifts to keep human beings company in world where the supply of love is lacking. Anyone that has had a dog friend in life knows that the dog lives for its master. How anyone could deprive these animals of human compasnionship is beyond me!

So I am doing a report on puppy mills and how terrible they are. I have been horrified by them for a couple years. All of the dogs I have owned are rescue dogs, and to be honest they're better than any other ones. Plus they need a home. Just remember in order to put a stop to puppymills we have to run them out of business and not buy them.

Maybe if they start losing votes.Maybe they will care then.I would take them if I could afford them. How can you not have a heart for all the animals who are so mistreated." Wow, this is exactly how I feel, when I read this I had to re-post it.. repetitive comments seem to work best. I am outraged at the conditions that I have seen on TV. Those precious animals need an advocate to speak up on their behalf. If our state government supports puppy mills, they should visit them in person before they vote on the issue. Maybe then those sweet, innocent animals would be protected instead of the cruel people that raise them in such horrid conditions.

Why we continue to allow the USDA even play a role (much less an authoritive one) in anything that has to do with animal welfare is beyond me. These people are not trained to recognize animal cruelty or neglect. True, it seems most compassionate people, even without formal training could recognize abuse... and this is true. Which only outlines what type of people work for the USDA. They cannot be compassionate, caring people. And to be honest, these types of people cannot be trained - there is no way to teach compassion - you either have it or you don't. We need to establish a totally new organization that is dedicated entirely to the welfare of all animals - no conflict of interest with big business. Until we disconnect the USDA from anything to do with animal welfare, we will not see significant changes. The poor animals need a true advocate NOW - they have suffered to long under the current bureaucratic system.

the puppy mill industry is horrible. I think the idea of making as many names PUBLIC is an idea worth considering, though I know that we can't get all the names. But it may be a place to start. I think that along with major campaigns...every day, speaking up, trying to convey the message to adopt vs. Buying a pure breed dog...or cat for that matter...is what we need to do. Animal hoarders....is another issue altogether. There is more, psychologically involved and the animals are not taken care of properly, oftentimes. I once had 8 cats. At that point I knew I could not adopt/take in another cat and provide them with the proper care they needed. The care for these cats has cost me THOUSANDS of dollars...one kitty...alone, cost me about $9000....over his short 9 years....I have been able to work out paying for the care of my kitties...but I would never recommend someone having that many cats. It is not fair to them. My oldest cats lived to 17.11; 18.2 and 19.9 years of age. I have four kitties now...13, 14, 14 and almost 15 years of age....I continue to have huge vet bills...and I don't regret any of that....but we all need to consider how we can care for our pets. I do know that there are many animals out there that need homes....and the animal shelters are not where most of us want to have them go. I also know I live in a community with multiple rescue groups and my community has been granted a $1million fund from Maddie's Foundation...we have been able to reduce unnecessary killing of adoptable pets over the past five years. Most communities don't have what exists where I live. Besides publicly noting who the puppies mills are....and that is, I think now, almost a lost cause....letting people know the many ways they can adopt the dog of their choice...is an avenue to follow. I often share with people that if they want a purebreed dog that there is an animal rescue group for any particular breed....I also talk to them about all the wonderful animals they can find in a shelter or with a rescure group and the advantages they may want to consider...adopting a mixed breed vs. a pure breed....I also will share with them about people I know, that have rescued purebreed dogs, how happy they are with their puppy...dog... IN the end...I guess my point is that every day, whenever there is an opportunity....voice the options they have...and to think about what they are doing before they make their decision.

Like everyone else, in the dictionary under CRUEL it should have puppy mill. Animals deserve tenderness love and care. I am so tired of reading about people that don't value their pets, don't care about their welfare, or their health. Animals have feelings they can be hurt. I say here for anyone to hear if I ever see anyone abusing an animal I will report them and if nothing is done to protect that animal I will intervene on the animals behalf. Please I encourage you to intervene and write your Congressman and senators about Puppy Mills and animal abuse. Thank you. I beleive that God made animals before he made people so how much does he love them? Ask yourself please!

The thing is,UKNOWHAT, the HSUS and other organizations are trying to stop the breeding of animals that rescues take in....they are not trying to euthanize, they are trying to stop the breeding for profit, and if I had a million dollars that would stop puppy mills for sure, I would give to that cause over rescue...Rescue survives by the human heart, puppy mills survive WITHOUT the human heart. Hoarding has nothing to do with rescue orgs. or the discussion of puppy mills here....puppy mills produce puppies for profit, there is NO HEART involved in this.

Trust me I have a heart and I would take in any animal if I had the means to do it, but "UKNOWWHAT", you can't take them all in and save them. You could be doing more harm then good. It's not being cruel saying it, it's thinking medically and logically. If you take them in, sure you're giving them a place to stay, but what happens when you can't feed them and they starve? Or what about diseases that can be spread? So many disease could be spread by having a ton of animals in one area that they could die from it. Also what if they aren't fixed? A female could become pregnant and make more animals to try and save. Too many animals on the street makes it hard for them all to be saved. Who is to blame for that? I would say the people that threw them out, not the humane societies or the organizations. That is why the ASPCA and other organizations aren't for hoarding. That's also probably why the shelter can't do pick ups because they are full and have no room for anymore animals. I'm going to school for the Vet Tech program, and I do go to a humane society for class and I will tell you that the humane society there will do what they can to help. They can't take in what they don't have room for, and the only way to make room is for people to foster them or put them down. It's sad, but they can't throw 3-5 dogs in one area, not all dogs get along. Also it is cruelty for someone to take animals they can't afford to feed. They don't just take an animal in and put it down for no reason. Also if an animal is taken in and never claimed, they go up for adoption, they are not killed. If you can help the animal without making the situation worse then do it, but you can't take every animal in, yeah it's not their fault there are so many strays running around, it's irresponsible people, or people that just threw them out. I don't know why you brought this up in a puppy mill discussion. Puppy mills aren't in the same category. You should have went to one of those discussions, not here.

Personally, I think that most of these so called "hoarders" are persons who start out taking in animals because they have a HEART and they dont want to euthanize the animals in the first place. I know several persons here locally that ASPCA PETA HSUS would refer to as hoarders when in all reality they cannot financially afford to take care of as many animals as they end up with. Our county has absolutely NO real rescue. The "HUMANE SOCIETY" here has a phone answering service that answers and says, "if you are call for animal pickup, WE DO NOT PICKUP ANIMALS, CALL THE SHERIFFS DEPARTMENT"??? You call the Sheriff, they send out animals control. Animal control will keep them 48 HOURS. IF they are not claimed they are killed. Dont go 72 hours later if you think your dog will be there. NOT!. This city and county wont spend a DIME hardly on rescue. I guess I would be considered a "hoarder" also at times. I take in all the time, place as many as I can as quickly as I can. There are three people within a 5 mile raidius of me that all do the same thing. Im saying this because, people can do only what they have means to do with. Sometimes they become overwhelmed because the community/local goverment WILL NOT TAKE THEIR RESPONSIBILITY AND DO THE RIGHT THING to help home and place the animals. Their ONLY answer is to euthanize. SO HOW THEY HELL DO YOU CHARGE A PERSON WHO HAS A LOVING HEART WITH ANIMAL CRUELTY when they are doing the only thing they know to do and can afford to do. Why dont the ASPCA PETA HSUS take some of their $300,000,000.000 ++++ a year donation dollars and HELP THESE PEOPLE.. STOP LYING and trying to charge people for this NON-SENSE.. When you see people in need HELP them stop trying to make a buck off of these bogus commercials. IN MOST CASES these people are the only ones who have a real heart in the first place. THE DO WHAT THEY CAN WITH WHAT THEY FINANICALLY CAN AFFORD.. Its NEVER enough. Whose fault is it?
