Animal Fighting Takes its Latest Victim—the Saffron Finch

There is a new victim of the shadowy world of animal fighting—the Saffron Finch. This small yellow songbird is the latest species to be fought in what is often a battle to the death. In nature, the 6-inch songbirds, indigenous to parts of South America, become very aggressive during mating. These fights, however, are often short-lived, as the birds have the option to fly away. In organized finch fights, the bird's natural instincts are exaggerated. Two male birds are placed in cages specifically built to promote competition—a female finch is suspended in a small box that hangs from the top of the cage. In many cases, the fighting birds will also have their bills sharpened to fine points or wear special blades to ensure maximum damage.

"I understand it sounds odd," says Tim Rickey, the ASPCA Director of Field Investigations. "But cruelty is cruelty, and the suffering that's part of this practice is horrible."

Besides being cruel to animals, finch fighting is closely connected to other crimes such as gambling, drugs and acts of violence. "The individuals who enjoy this kind of brutality, who attend these fights should be regarded as very dangerous," Rickey says. "They're the same type of people who enjoy dog fighting and rooster fighting."

Also known as canary fighting, this blood sport was prevalent in Brazil until it was banned two decades ago—but that hasn't stopped it from coming to America. Over the past several months, authorities have busted two finch fighting operations on the East Coast. Last June, 19 men were arrested and 150 birds seized in a Connecticut bust. And just last month, more than 20 finches were seized in a Massachusetts raid, where an investigation is ongoing.

"There's more of this going on than people know," says Rickey. "Finches are much cheaper to raise, they're quieter, and they're easier to transport and secret away. Trends like this, once they kick off, don't take much time to catch on."

I cannot stand it anymore!!!!!!!!! People make me sick!!!!!!!Until there are stricter laws and punishment things are never going to change. These people are never going to stop because they know that all they will get is a slap on the wrist. Enough is enough!!They are cowards making these poor animals fight their battles. Why don't they step up and take care of their own battles!!!!!!!!Put themselves in the animals place and stop being cowards.

I'll say it again, if the people responsible were treated as they treat these poor defenceless animals, perhaps it would make a difference in the arranged blood bath fighting.

I have read a story in the ASPCA's magazine about MCDONALD'S doing animal cruelty. They boil the LIVE chickens in hot water to get off their feathers, then CUT OFF THEIR NECKS while they are STILL alive! I am a member of The Stopping Animal Cruelty Group.

Animal cruelty is a horrible thing. People that think that hurting animals is funny, they have no life at all. Go out and get a life!!!

So we know the world is getting pretty sad when they start to terrorize birds as a pass time. You say you get money for the winner bird, and even the loser one? Wow. Did you know you could also get money by getting a job and helping out your economy, which in contrast to abusing animals, isn't frowned upon? People are pathetic and lazy. At least ASPCA makes people more aware of the cruelty going on in the world.

People who enjoy the cruelty of animals are dumb, wait there isn't a word even to describe how idiotic and pathetic these people are.

Why do people participate in animal fighting? Crickets, dogs, chickens, finches... What's next??? This is a cruel, needless sport.

I think any person who fights any type of animal should be put in the animals spot and they should get torn to pieces! They should have to feel first hand what the poor animal has to go through!

This is to all of you who take part in any animal fighting-first of all you should spend your life in jail for getting a thrill off of animals trying to kill eachtother and also go get a real job that doesnt make look like a piece of trash for having innocent animals fight. Time to grow up people! you all make me sick

  • Submitted by Linda at:March 16, 2010 12:00 AM

Wow. I don't know what to say about this, other than it is absolutely horrifying that people are so pathetic that they can't go out and find a job where they could earn a salary, that they have to fight small, innocent BIRDS in order to survive.

Some people get a thrill out of watching weaker beings struggle. This is a sad situation. I hope the law is successful in prosecuting these groups who benefit from this exploitation.

A lot of people only have animal fighting because others pay them to win or lose. It sounds like a terrible deal, though.
