California Chihuahuas Arrive at the ASPCA

Chihuahua

On January 6, the ASPCA Adoption Center welcomed 15 Chihuahuas who flew from California to the Big Apple in search of new forever homes. The dogs originated from the City of San Francisco Animal Care & Control, and their in-cabin transportation was donated by Virgin Airlines. After some post-travel rest and relaxation, the tiny pups will be made available for adoption next week at the ASPCA in Manhattan.

Over the past year, California shelters have seen a dramatic increase in Chihuahua intakes—this toy breed now makes up more than 30% of the state’s shelter dog population. While demand for Chihuahuas has declined in much of the Golden State, their popularity in New York City is as high as ever.

"They're portable, and people like portability in the city," said Gail Buchwald, Senior Vice President for the ASPCA Adoption Center in New York City. Aside from easily fitting in a carrier for a subway ride, their small size is ideal for living in compact apartments.

Gail adds: “We are glad to be given this opportunity to help New Yorkers get the small dogs they want, and at the same time, help find loving homes for San Francisco’s homeless animals.”

The dogs will be available for viewing at the ASPCA Adoption Center on Wednesday, January 13, between the hours of noon and 7:00 P.M. Adoption fees will range from $75 to $200, and include all medical and behavioral treatments, vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery and a microchip.

what a joke!!!!!!!! the ad in the paper and on the news channel saying they have all these chihuahua's to adopt and setup a day to come down. there was no cordination at all, the line was down the block and they gave out no information to the people standing in the freezing cold, people were cutting the line, no security came out at all or anyone to manage the line and give any kind of info. elderly people were freezing along with a bunch a dogs that people bought there, then only let in a handfull every 45 mins??? it was a sick ploy to fool people into adopting other dogs there. worst experience in my life. why was nt there any manager or supervisor out there to explain to the people on line that they had no chance at all???? and were left standing out there. i took a day off, paid for parking for this hoax??? how come they never said iin the paper or newschannel that there were only 11 dogs ??? 4 were sick and returned. another gimmick! you do not have my support anymore, now i have a nasty cold along with my grandmother

We rescued two out of a hot garage in Riverside California over two years ago. There are so many it is sad. We went to get one, and could not leave the sister. They are now our Lucy and Sally. They join Peanut a rescue we got when he was still nursing, and is now 13. Also a tiny little not going to live "he is too small" Chihuahua named Linus. The house is full and with a stay at home Mom, lots of attention and love. The Groomer does their nails and we have regular vet visits. It is important to understand pets (family members) are going to be expensive and consideration for anywhere you go must be top priority. We love them so very much, could not live without them. Our three teens are almost out of the house. Literally in two years, two go. We will have our babies to keep us company.
