Find a Shelter

Looking for a shelter

Are you looking to adopt or foster a pet? Want to volunteer to help homeless animals in your community? Need to report an animal you’ve lost or found, or contact an animal control officer about animal cruelty in your area? Your local shelter can help.

Adopting a Pet

Live in New York City? Visit the ASPCA Adoption Center in Manhattan to adopt or foster an animal. Or check out photos of our available cats and dogs.

Live outside NYC? Our national database includes cats and dogs looking for homes in shelters across the country. You can also locate the shelter nearest you by visiting Petfinder’s handy shelter list.

Reporting Animal Cruelty

In NYC: Cruelty situations involving animals in New York City should be reported to the ASPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement department at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4450, or humanel@aspca.org.

Outside NYC: Find out who is responsible for investigating and enforcing the anti-cruelty codes in your town, county and/or state. These people typically work for your local humane organization, animal control agency, taxpayer-funded animal shelter or police precinct. If you run into trouble finding the correct agency to contact, please call your local police department.

Volunteering for Animals

In NYC: Volunteers assist in the care of the dogs and cats housed in our shelter, help place them in loving homes and provide support for administrative programs. Help Big Apple pets by volunteering your time at the ASPCA in Manhattan or Animal Care & Control (AC&C) in one of the city’s five boroughs.

ASPCA

Outside NYC: To learn how you can volunteer for animals in your ‘hood, visit Petfinder’s comprehensive shelter list.
