Owner of Neglected Arkansas Horses Arrested

HorsesThe owner of more than 100 severely neglected horses was arrested on Thursday, December 30—a few weeks after the ASPCA Field Investigations and Response (FIR) team arrived in Fulton County, Arkansas, to rescue the starved equines.

Rodney Kankey, 50, was charged with 118 counts of animal cruelty, five of them felonies. The felonies each carry a penalty of up to six years in prison. Kankey, the owner of the Fulton County farm, purchased horses from auctions and then re-sold them to the public. The ASPCA became involved in the case after a seven-month cruelty investigation by the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office.

"We appreciate the diligence of the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office in pursuing this case and bringing appropriate charges against the owner of these horses,” says Kyle Held, Midwest Director of Field Investigations and Response. “Animal cruelty should not be tolerated in any community, and we’re pleased that Kankey was held accountable for blatantly neglecting his animals.”

Kankey’s case illustrates the link between animal cruelty and other violence; he is now awaiting a March trial for several violent felony charges, including aggravated assault and terroristic threatening.

When the FIR team arrived in Fulton County, they found dead equines and more than 100 horses suffering from obvious signs of neglect that included infections and untreated injuries. The FIR team members, along with ASPCA Volunteer Response Team members, have been working day and night—throughout the holiday season—to bring the horses urgently needed food, shelter and veterinary care, nursing them back to health.

“We want to thank the community for providing supplies to help us care for these horses over the past few weeks and especially during the holidays,” says Held, adding that most of the horses are responding well to veterinary care and are regaining strength every day. “The horses are still under quarantine and are not yet available for adoption, but we’re hoping once they become available, the community will open their arms and offer these beautiful animals permanent homes.”

I will never understand how a human being would treat these gorgeous creatures with such neglect! Kankey belongs in jail and should not EVER be allowed to own any type of animal!! Thank you to the ASPCA FIR team for using their resources to rescue these horses from the terrible situation they were living in. My heart is truly touched by all these amazing rescue stories!!

I want to thank the ASPCA and anyone else that assisted with this situation, for their hard work and devotion to these beautiful horses. If these surviving horses could speak, we know what they all would be saying. My feeling is that anyone that knew about the condition of these horses and failed to report it to the authorities, is guilty of extremely serious crimes and should be severely punished. If even one horse lost it's life at the hands of this person &/or other individuals, I feel they should suffer the same fate. Thank God for the ASPCA.

I just want to take a moment to say a heartfelt thank you to all the ASPCA field investigators who worked so hard to gather the info needed for the response team to take action. AND special thanks to all of the ASPCA response team taking the time during the holidays to stay and make sure all the horses were cared for. Many of us read the ASPCA news and are inspired by YOU to do what we can to help all types of animals in need of help. Again, a great big thanks from Michigan.

What is Kate talking about? Of course he should be judged. And if the wife stood by and watched and knew that the horses were suffering to the extent they were, then she should be judged too! No excuse in the world could jusify that kind of treatment of those horses!

to katy: To start with it does not mater the story that might be told by the wife. If she lives at this place where the animals where being kept then I agree with Melinda that she should also be charged. I have several pets and I know that if my husband didn't take care of them then I would and if I could I would find someone to help me. It is pure creed that they bought these horses at a low price and tried to sell them to make a profit and didn't take care of them. What the hell did these 100 horses do to this family to deserve the abuse they got.. there is no story from any part of this that can justify the cruelty these animals suffered. I say lock them up and don't feed them and let them see how it feels.. eye for a eye.. bottom line !!!!

to melinda you obviously don't have the whole story. Before you start passing judgement on someone be sure you have all the facts on that person. I suggest you try to contact the wife and get her side of the story first then form your opinion

I can't believe anybody would do something this cruel, especially to these beautiful, gentle creatures. I'm glad that they've been rescued and that this man will be punished. people like this shouldn't be allowed to keep animals.

i just cant imagine being in those type of situations even with those horses its very sad because some people dont even care of animals like what is the point of having an animal if you dont take careof it/them or even take your time to love them . I hate people like that and i wish those animals are taken cared of well and they all have good homes like some people do.I think people just need to place them in an animals place to see how it feels but soo glad they dont suffer.

Why do people buy horses if they are going to abuse them? I am just glad that some of the horses survived! Thank you ASPCA for helping save the horses!!

i think it is a good thing that he is getting charged with all 118 counts. he is a disgrace to animals. these animals are beautiful animals and no animal deserves to get treated the way he treated them. animals are harmless and can not speak for themselves nor help themselves if their being mistreated. people should realize that these animals are here for good purposes, and to love and care for, and yet here we have people abusing them or training them to fight each other or even kill. its such a shame bcuz we can not blame the animals wen they attack its the ownwers fault for training them like that and not teaching them right and loving them and taking care of them. for that, then dont have animals at all. they cant speak up for themselves so we the people have to and punish those who abuse them. i love animals truly and donate to them every month. i have 3 cats of my own with whom i love with all my heart. so im glad hes being charged but i think she should be charged as well. my name is lori from nyc and this is my opinion.

you know i just dont get it, why would someone want to do this to one of gods animals. let alone why they would only take the man but left his wife, she was there I thank she sould get charged too. This makes me very very mad, how some people can get charged but others walk from the hole thing in hand. Why she not being charged??? thats what i want to know whats good for one is good for the other!!! thank you and have a nice day and dont be mean to one of gods animals its not like they can fight back or take care of theirselfs, them animals need us to hold, love, feed, and care for them with all our hearts. if you cant do either of these then dont get an animal.
