Second Chances

Suki the Cat

This week’s Happy Tail comes from Evelyn Encarnacion of the Bronx, New York.

I adopted a kitty from the ASPCA on July 18, 2010, and the ASPCA has called several times to see how she's doing. Here’s the answer.

My experience with the ASPCA began when Rudee, my cat of 19 years, fell ill. We took her to the ASPCA Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital in NYC. When our vet gave us the bad news that we would lose Rudi to stomach cancer, I was beside myself. The vet consoled us with such compassion and care—she even cried with me! I'll never forget her.

After losing Rudee, I honestly wasn't ready to take in another kitty—but my husband convinced me to return to the ASPCA, this time to the Adoption Center, and eventually I agreed. When we arrived at the ASPCA to meet the cats, Suki, then named Amethyst, was the only one who came over to me and rubbed on my legs, and I was hooked by her quick affinity for me. That's all I needed. I said to my husband, “She's the one! Let’s take her home!”

I have to say, she's the best kitty I've ever had thus far! She gives us so much affection and love; always lets people touch or hold her; and as soon as you take her in your arms, she starts to caress you. She's so lovable.

I don't know what I would do now without my Suki—she's the child I never had!
